Back to School Campaign

Every summer, the Orlando Sentinel Family Fund Back to School Campaign raises money for backpacks and school supplies for elementary school kids who would otherwise do without.

Orlando Sentinel and the McCormick Foundation pays all costs for the campaign, so that 100 percent of each donation and the matching funds will help children in Orange, Seminole, Osceola, Lake and Western Volusia counties. The McCormick Foundation matches all donations by 50% making your donation go even further.

Results

In 2010, nearly 10,000 students in Central Florida elementary schools received backpacks filled with books and school supplies. At an average cost of $12 per child, this program did more than give these children the tools they needed to learn - it helped them build their self-esteem and self-confidence so they had a better chance of being successful during the new school year.

Reading by Nine

The Back to School Campaign is intended to complement the Sentinel’s Reading by Nine initiative. Reading by Nine is a multi-year, multi-faceted program with a goal that all children in Central Florida will read in English at grade level by age nine.
